I want you to see a map of the island of Iwo Jima. Find Mount Suribachi, the highest elevation, at the far southern point of the island. That is where the flag was raised. Look around the island and count the number of airfields. This was a critical island to both the Japanese and the Allied forces. This island was an important place to bring supplies and land aircraft during the war. Its possession was critical to winning the war in the Pacific.
